THE ĽUPČA CASTLE

Whitsun market (Turíčny jarmok) in Slovenská Ľupča

Approximately 100 market stalls, gingerbread hearts, sausages, wooden spoons, wicker baskets, performances by various musical and dance formations, marry-go-rounds and allegoric parade. This is how Slovenská Ľupča looked on 7 June. The visitors of the 14th year of the traditional Whitsun Market enjoyed the exquisite demonstration of traditional craft, meals, dance, music and even a short amateur theatre performance.

Every year during the market Ľupča a House of Craft is opened. It offers a rich programme full of various interesting demonstrations of traditional craft production, smithery, metal bashing, making of copper jewellery, making of traditional “fujara”, making of pottery on traditional potter´s wheel, or weaving using loom. Every visitor could try gold-washing or immerse himself into the ancient era of knights during performances of a fencing ensemble Ricasso. This year the market featured a new event – Ľupča wine festival where famous wine-makers from the whole Slovakia presented their products.

After a positive experience from the previous year, when the Ľupča castle was visited by numerous visitors during the Whitsun Market, the proud Castle opened its gates again. After conquering the high castle hill the visitors could enjoy historical atmosphere accompanied by medieval music and tours led by lecturers dressed in Renaissance costumes. During the tour the Castle visitors experienced some novelties that made the tour even more attractive and more interesting. Lapidary – i.e. a place where stone objects connected with the history of Castle and Kláštorisko were gathered and displayed (cannon balls, portal fragments, walls and a unique mascaron) – was placed in front of the polygonal bastion at the lower Castle courtyard. Simulated ancient feast dinner with refreshment from the company ŽP Gastroservis was installed in the Castle to present the ancient Castle feast. During the Whitsun Market the Castle was visited by a record-breaking 732 visitors, many of which appreciated a very delicate reconstruction of the Castle complex and showed their gratitude to Železiarne Podbrezová, the Castle owner, for it.

Whitsun Market in Slovenská Ľupča lured hundreds of visitors from the whole region. They enjoyed almost 500-year old market tradition of the former royal town and all of them surely left contented and with a lot of experience.
